the second half of the twentieth century, it crossed the river and became a
metropolis. Today, it seems that Zagreb consists of three towns in one: the
Upper Town, with the enchanting peace and quiet of past times, the Lower
Town, as lively as the biggest European business centers, and New Zagreb,
reminding one of a huge exhibition of contemporary architecture and
urbanism. All periods of Zagreb’s history left traces in the architecture,
in the sacral and secular monuments, and in the design of streets, squares
and parks. Diverse and charming, a city of spirit and art, a city of
mysterious beauty, a strong cultural, scientific, economic and political
center of the Croatian state and of all Croats, Zagreb opens its doors wide
